Cough Treatment

Coughing is an automatic reflex action to clear your airways of mucus or any choking. Everyone coughs occasionally to ‘clear their throats.’ The cough reflex protects the lungs, but visit your doctor in case a persistent cough lasts for over three weeks. If you’re often short of breath, cough up blood, are losing weight or run a high temperature, see your doctor as soon as possible. The acute cough usually improves in one week if it is a viral infection, which causes a runny nose and cough. Cough treatment depends on the cause of the cough.

Common causes

Viral infection cause upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are less common. It can lead to more serious lung infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections cause these conditions. Asthma is the wheezing sound while breathing. Breathlessness and cough at night are strong symptoms of asthma. This leads to frequent coughing when exposed to cold air. Irritants in the air like smoke or chemical fumes irritate the airway passage. Therefore, results in coughing. Other major infections such as whooping cough and tuberculosis may cause a longer-lasting cough. Underlying medical conditions also effect coughing. Medical issues include: lung cancer, cystic fibrosis in lungs, and pneumothorax, and bronchiectasis. Pneumothorax is when the air gets trapped outside the lung, inside the chest. Bronchiectasis is when the airways of the lungs are excessively wide. Thus, extra mucus or pulmonary embolus may form.

Cough treatment

Cough treatment depends on the likely cause of your cough. For acute coughs by viral infections, simple remedies may help. For example, good inhaling steam, honey, and lemon tea will soothe your throat and blocked airways. In case of mild fever or aches and pains, physicians recommend those to take Tylenol or Advil for relief. The cough gets cured on its own. If the underlying cause is by bacterial infection, then doctors may prescribe antibiotics.

Prevention
